Mission 024 – Aggressive Lieutenants
Well, we don’t know what Loss of Lieutenant will look like in N4, but we do know what it looks like in Code One and N3.
In Code One, it’s basically nonexistent! In N3, it’s somewhat punishing but is a slap on the wrist in comparison to the brutal flogging we used to get back in N2 days.
Still, Code One is new and Loss of Lieutenant sucks. This means that a lot of times, people tend to leave their Lieutenants prone on a roof, unused all game. They also tend to avoid expensive Lieutenant profiles for fear of being in Loss of Lieutenant.
This month, we’re going to change all that.
The Mission
- Don’t take chain of command if it’s available to your army.
- Do take an aggressive lieutenant profile, or better yet, a specialist lieutenant.
- Make your lieutenant a direct actor in accomplishing mission objectives (gunfighting, button pushing, etc).
- Use your lieutenant order every turn.

Aggressive Lieutenants
I can already hear you:
“Wait, won’t this mission get my Lieutenant killed?”
Probably! The point of this mission is to give you a chance to practice the following:
- Trying a new Lieutenant profile.
- Getting the most utility out of that Lieutenant order resource!
- Spending orders to retreat your Lieutenant or otherwise defend them.
- Planning for…
- and executing properly in a Loss of Lieutenant turn.
This is especially relevant for Nomads, who have a lot of really great Lieutenants and no access to Chain of Command! Imagine consistently having an extra order on a Kriza HMG to take out one more (or even two more targets)! Using that WIP 15 Interventor to go push buttons in the midfield and remove things with that BS11, surprise shot (thanks to Cybermask) combi rifle!
The point of this isn’t to suicide a Kriza into your enemy’s deployment zone (although that is ENTIRELY valid for Code One, and you should be doing that if it helps you win the game). In fact, if you’re uncomfortable with this mission, play some Code One and run your lieutenant around to get some work done! That ORC HMG lieutenant is a real jerk in Code One if it’s marching up the board gunning stuff down, especially since there’s not much in the way of a penalty if you lose him.
What we are trying to is to get you out of your comfort zone! You’re going to be in loss of lieutenant at some point in your Infinity career, why not make it on your terms?
Also, slotting in a Lieutenant in your list can be difficult, why not do something like put that Reverend Custodier HD+ Lieutenant in your list and get a specialist, a gunfighter, and a lieutenant all in one list slot? What a bargain!
There’s a lot to unpack here, so I’m going to just give you some examples and then let you go try it out for yourself on the table. What follows is a list of battle reports where someone was in Loss of Lieutenant and still managed to eke out a win. Hopefully they do a good job of illustrating my thinking and methodology for digging myself out of that hole.
There are certainly more lurking in my battle reports, but there’s just a sampling so you have something to look at. I think the best example of a really strong recovery from LoL is Courageous Charontid, so do have a look at that one.
